Redesign of device control center for the Pura iOS app, focusing on creating a more straightforward, unified experience for an expanded product line of diffusers for both home and car.
The original Pura app was created based on a basic music player layout, with an “album art,” a start/stop button comparative to a play/pause button, and an intensity slider relative to volume. While this was a functional solution for a small business, the company has quickly outgrown this design and needed something that could scale to accommodate a larger product line and refocus on simple device control at the top of the hierarchy, rather than showcasing the brand partnerships for fragrances.

Conflict
Upon reviewing initial user feedback and discovery, we learned that it was essential to create a simple, seamless experience for users that would apply to both our current wall diffuser and upcoming diffuser models for both home and car. Users were spending too much time in the app controlling their devices, and a solution was needed to automate that process and allow for faster manual control.
Additionally, I was excited to bring my graphic design expertise to this project to elevate the interface and create a more premium app experience that matched the brand's goals. It was both a difficult and exciting challenge to start from scratch without existing parameters for the app, such as a solid design system to work off of.

Solution
We started with device control as the primary focus for the first phase of the app redesign. First, we determined the app's "core functions"–the ability to turn the device on/off, control intensity, and automate controls with a timer, schedule, and location services. I then began creating several designs to convey these controls in the simplest way possible, which led to the current alpha version.

Unfortunately, due to time restraints on the backend, we were unable to build the ideal device control experience as planned. The company priorities shifted to accommodate a quick solution to adding device control for Pura Car to the existing app experience. We then began to brainstorm solutions for this and test in one-on-one calls with several existing customers to get feedback on which design they preferred.

Outcome
The main difference between the in-app device control dashboard and the physical device controls is the scent remaining indicator, so based on user feedback, we decided to make that the focal point of the dashboard so that it would be easy to view at-a-glance while driving. This feature adds value to the overall experience by providing data visualization that other car scent experiences fail to provide to create a smarter experience.
